November 20, 2023I’m Honing My Personal Brand. Here’s Why You Should Too
January 18, 2024Personal branding and digital leadership are indispensable in today's hyper-connected world. As Stacey Ross Cohen — renowned expert in personal branding and author of Brand Up: The Ultimate Playbook for College & Career Success in the Digital World — points out, "Managing your online reputation is no longer optional. It's a requirement."
Consider this: There are approximately six million Google searches every minute. Someone may be searching for you right now. And so, it is imperative to take control of your digital presence. You simply can't afford to leave your digital footprint to chance.
Your digital footprint is all information about you online: social media profiles, personal websites, news articles, and more. Taking control of all this ensures that your personal brand shines for the job recruiters and admission officers who come across it. A well-managed digital presence demonstrates your expertise and credibility, while a negative one deters opportunities.
So how do you control your digital footprint and personal brand? Stacey has eight tips:
Define Your Brand: Do a self-audit to pinpoint your purpose, strengths, values, and passions. It's essential to figure out your superpower or "wow" factor: Consider what you stand for and what you want to be known for.
Answer the million-dollar question: Why Choose You? Competition is fierce, so emphasize unconventional hobbies and unique experiences and perspectives. Showcase your talents on a personal website, in videos, blogs — even in your email signature.
Be Authentic: Don't try to be someone you're not. People connect with real, genuine individuals. It's about telling your story, building credibility, and positioning yourself as a thought leader in your field. "Your personal brand should reflect who you are and what you stand for," Stacey explains.
Content is All That: Share content that reflects your expertise and interests — and, just as importantly, establishes you as an authority.
Consistency Matters: Ensure that your digital presence is consistent across all platforms. Use the same professional photo, handle, and bio to maintain a cohesive image.
Engage and Network: You know what they say: It's all who you know. Building a strong network — online and off — opens up opportunities and collaborations.
Monitor and Adjust: Regularly monitor your digital footprint with tools like Google Alerts and act fast to counter any negative or inaccurate information.
Continuous Learning: Invest in enhancing your digital skills and stay updated on industry trends.
In today's world, personal branding and digital leadership aren't fleeting trends; they're a requirement for academic and career success. Even high school students should be mindful of their digital footprint — Stacey recommends individuals join LinkedIn by age 16. Your presence online is the key to unlocking opportunities, shaping perceptions, and securing your future.
